The protocol
- Temperature: Water you normally shower in for the warm phase; as cold as your shower allows for the cold phase
- Timing: 3 cycles of 30 s warm → 30 s cold; finish on cold
- Duration: ~3 minutes added to the end of a normal shower
- Frequency: Daily (or every shower)
- Prerequisites:
- Start with a single 15-second cold finish for the first week before working up to full cycles
- Breathe slowly and deliberately through the cold phase — do not hold your breath
What you get

Contraindications
- Raynaud syndrome — cold exposure triggers vasospasm in peripheral vessels and can cause tissue injury.

- Cold urticaria — an allergic reaction to cold that produces hives; cold water exposure is contraindicated.
- Pregnancy — avoid extreme temperature shifts; discuss with your obstetrician.
- If you feel chest tightness, shortness of breath, or dizziness during any cold phase, stop immediately.
Evidence level
Medium. Cold-water immersion research is relatively robust for norepinephrine release and muscle-soreness reduction; the specific HRV improvement from contrast showers (vs. cold immersion) has fewer published trials. The protocol is low-risk for healthy individuals when contraindications are respected, and the mechanistic rationale (autonomic alternation) is well-supported.
