What moves the needle
- Diet. Leafy greens, eggs, and oily fish provide natural folate, B12, and B6 — the three B-vitamins that convert homocysteine back to methionine. Improving dietary quality is the first-line approach.
- If dietary change is insufficient: a methylated B-complex supplement (containing methylfolate + methylcobalamin rather than folic acid + cyanocobalamin) is often more effective for people with common MTHFR variants. Discuss dose and form with a clinician.
- Retest. Recheck homocysteine 3 months after beginning any dietary or supplementation intervention.
