Standing Desk — 30/30 Alternation — 60-Second Protocol

Standing all day isn't the upgrade — alternating is.
Alternate thirty minutes seated and thirty standing rather than committing to either. All-day standing swaps one static posture for another and produces its own complaints; the alternation is what the desk was actually worth buying for.
The protocol
| Cue | a repeating timer — position changes are the thing deep work makes you forget |
| Cycle | 30 min seated / 30 min standing |
| Duration | ongoing |
| Escalation | add a 2 min walk on every second changeover |
| Seated setup | feet flat, hips slightly above knees, lumbar supported |
| Standing setup | elbows at ~90°, screen at eye height, anti-fatigue mat, shoes on |
Skip this if
- varicose veins or venous insufficiency — long standing blocks may worsen symptoms
- acute low-back or foot pain: change positions more often, not less
- pregnancy — shorten standing blocks as comfort dictates
The riser I use sits on top of the desk I already had, so a changeover is one motion rather than a project.

Standing all day isn't the upgrade — alternating is. All-day standing just swaps one static posture for another. Thirty minutes seated, thirty standing, on a repeating timer, because a position change is the first thing deep work makes you forget. Seated: feet flat, hips slightly above knees, lumbar supported. Standing: elbows at ninety degrees, screen at eye height, shoes on. Add a two-minute walk on every second changeover. agegen.ai. Generate your prime age! ~~ Mr. Age
