Refeed Strategy — Post-Fast Meal — AgeGen

The first meal after a 24-hour fast should be moderate in size, protein-led, with cooked vegetables and a slow carb source — not raw salad, not a high-fat or high-sugar meal, and not alcohol. The gut has reduced digestive output after a day without food; a structured refeed reduces discomfort and avoids the glucose spike that an unplanned large meal would cause.

How you break a fast matters more than the fast itself.

Mr. Age is AgeGen's editorial character. Facts come from the protocol above.

The protocol

  • First meal: protein-led (eggs, chicken, fish, legumes) with cooked vegetables and one slow-carb source (oats, sweet potato, brown rice, lentils).
  • Portion: moderate — roughly your normal meal size, not the oversized plate the fast may have triggered craving for.
  • Avoid for the first meal:
    • Raw salad (harder to digest on a quiet gut)
    • High-fat or high-sugar foods (amplify glucose and lipid spikes)
    • Alcohol
    • Caffeine on an empty stomach
  • Return to normal eating in the meals that follow — the refeed strategy applies only to the first post-fast meal.

What you get

  • Easier digestion. After 24 h without food, digestive enzyme output is reduced. Cooked, protein-led food is gentler on a quiet gut than raw fibre or high-fat loads.
  • Smoother glucose response. A protein-first, slow-carb meal prevents the sharp glucose spike that a high-GI first meal on an empty stomach would cause — a spike that can feel worse than normal due to post-fast insulin sensitivity.
  • Better adherence to the next fast. A comfortable, satisfying refeed reduces the binge urge that derails the next monthly cycle.

Contraindications

  • General fasting contraindications still apply: pregnancy, active eating disorder, Type 1 diabetes without clinician oversight, underweight.

Evidence level

Medium. The mechanistic rationale for a structured refeed is well-grounded in digestive physiology, but dedicated randomised trials on first-meal composition after a 24-hour fast are limited. The protocol is a common-sense extension of what is known about postprandial glucose dynamics and gut readiness. Honour the contraindications without exception.
