Sunscreen on Exposed Skin — Daily Habit
Apply broad-spectrum SPF 30+ to exposed skin, reapply every two hours — sunscreen supplements shade and clothing, it doesn't replace them.
Apply a broad-spectrum SPF 30+ sunscreen to skin that clothing doesn't cover, and reapply about every two hours and after swimming or sweating — sunscreen supplements shade and clothing, it doesn't replace them.
Watch the 25-second version
Sunscreen goes on fifteen minutes before you go outside, not once you are already in the sun.

The protocol
- How: use plenty of sunscreen on exposed skin about 15 minutes before going outside.
- With: use alongside shade, a wide-brimmed hat and covering clothing.
- Label: choose SPF 30 or higher, labelled broad spectrum (UVA and UVB); in the UK also look for at least 4-star UVA protection.
- Clouds: UV can pass through cloud, so cloudy days still count.
- Reapply: about every 2 hours, and straight after swimming or heavy sweating.
- Duration: ongoing, on days with sun exposure.
What you get
- Helps protect exposed skin from ultraviolet radiation.
- Works best combined with shade and clothing, not as a stand-alone measure.
Contraindications
- Babies under 6 months should be kept out of direct sunlight — sunscreen is not recommended for them. From 6 months, use SPF 30 or higher.
- Do not rely on sunscreen alone; use shade and covering clothing as well, especially around midday.
Evidence level
High. Broad-spectrum SPF 30+ sunscreen protecting exposed skin from UV radiation, used alongside shade and clothing, is settled public-health guidance from the NHS and CDC. The open question for any individual is adherence and reapplication, not whether the mechanism works.
