Sunscreen goes on fifteen minutes before you go outside, not once you are already in the sun.
Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher to skin that clothing does not cover, and reapply about every two hours and after swimming or sweating. Sunscreen supplements shade and clothing; it does not replace them.
The protocol
| How | use plenty of sunscreen on exposed skin about 15 minutes before going outside |
| With | use alongside shade, a wide-brimmed hat and covering clothing |
| Label | choose SPF 30 or higher, labelled broad spectrum (UVA and UVB); in the UK also look for at least 4-star UVA protection |
| Clouds | UV can pass through cloud, so cloudy days still count |
| Reapply | about every 2 hours, and straight after swimming or heavy sweating |
| Duration | ongoing, on days with sun exposure |
Skip this if
- babies under 6 months should be kept out of direct sunlight and sunscreen is not recommended for them; from 6 months use SPF 30 or higher
- do not rely on sunscreen alone; use shade and covering clothing as well, especially around midday
