Dark Bedroom — Lights Out, LEDs Covered — 60-Second Protocol

Lie in bed with the lights off and count every light you can see.
Make the bedroom as dark as you can for the whole night: block outside light, cover standby LEDs and seal the gap under the door. Darkness is the signal for melatonin release, and even brief light at night can disrupt the sleep-wake cycle and make it harder to fall back asleep.
The protocol
| Door | a rolled towel along the gap if hallway light comes in |
| Leds | cover or turn away standby lights and chargers |
| Survey | lie in bed with the lights off and note every light source — street, standby LEDs, door gap, charger |
| Windows | block outside light with heavy curtains or blinds |
| Duration | 2 weeks, then keep |
| Fallback | an eye mask where the room cannot be made dark |
| Night path | a low plug-in light on the route to the bathroom, not in the bedroom's line of sight |

- older adults or anyone unsteady: never trade darkness for a dark path — keep a low night light between bed and bathroom
