Dark Bedroom — Lights Out, LEDs Covered
Make the bedroom as dark as you can all night: block outside light, cover standby LEDs and seal the door gap to protect the melatonin signal.
Make the bedroom as dark as you can for the whole night — block outside light, cover standby LEDs and seal the gap under the door — because darkness is the signal for melatonin release.

Even brief light at night can disrupt the sleep-wake cycle and make it harder to fall back asleep.
The protocol
- Survey: lie in bed with the lights off and note every light source — street, standby LEDs, door gap, charger.
- Windows: block outside light with heavy curtains or blinds.
- LEDs: cover or turn away standby lights and chargers.
- Door: a rolled towel along the gap if hallway light comes in.
- Fallback: an eye mask where the room cannot be made dark.
- Night path: a low plug-in light on the route to the bathroom, not in the bedroom's line of sight.
- Duration: 2 weeks, then keep.
What you get
- Supports the dark signal that drives melatonin production.
- Fewer light interruptions that make it harder to fall back asleep.
- Usually a one-off fix.
Contraindications
- Older adults or anyone unsteady: never trade darkness for a dark path — keep a low night light between bed and bathroom.
Evidence level
Medium. The link between light at night and disrupted sleep is described by the linked sleep-medicine sources; the rule itself is a low-risk environmental change rather than a tested intervention with a defined dose.
