What moves the needle
- If flagged: a marked potassium or sodium abnormality is followed up promptly by a clinician.
- Medications: list diuretics, ACE inhibitors, ARBs and NSAIDs — all shift electrolytes.
- Preparation: follow the fasting instruction for the panel it is bundled into.
- Endurance: long efforts in heat need a fluid and electrolyte plan; discuss it before an event, not after a bad reading.
- Potassium caution: do not add potassium supplements or potassium-based salt substitutes without clinical advice, especially with kidney disease.
