The signals matter more than a fixed number of litres.
Make plain water your default drink, have it with and between meals and around exercise, and use thirst and urine colour as the check. Total fluid needs differ with age, activity, weather and health, so the signals matter more than a fixed number.
The protocol
| When | with each meal and between meals, before, during and after exercise, and whenever you feel thirsty |
| Check | thirst, dry mouth, dark urine and urinating less than usual are signs to drink more — a prompt, not a test |
| Default | water instead of sugary drinks — tap, bottled or sparkling; berries or slices of lemon, lime or cucumber for flavour |
| Duration | ongoing |
| Reference | about 2.7 litres of total fluid a day for women and 3.7 litres for men, counting fluid from all drinks and food; your own need can differ |
Skip this if
- if you have heart, kidney or liver disease you may need to limit how much you drink — follow your clinician's limit, not a general target
- drinking too much water, for example during long endurance events, can drop blood sodium to a dangerous level — drink to need, not to a quota
- older adults can lose their sense of thirst, and people with certain diseases such as diabetes are at higher risk of dehydration — ask a clinician how much is right
- severe dehydration needs medical care — faintness, confusion or very little urine are reasons to get help
