Fall-Proof Home Audit — Room by Room
Walk your home one room at a time and fix what could trip you — loose rugs, clutter, cords, dim stairwells and missing handrails. Most of it is an afternoon's work.

Protocol
- First: fix the immediate dangers — loose stair railings and poor lighting.
- Floors: carpets fixed firmly, walkways clear of books, clothes and shoes, cords run along the walls.
- Stairs: secure handrails on both sides, light switches at top and bottom, nothing left on the steps.
- Night: plug-in lights that light the path to the bathroom.
- Reach: keep everyday items at waist level — never stand on a chair to reach something.
- Furniture: low tables out of walking paths; chairs and sofas at a height that's easy to get out of.
- Outside: paths clear of debris, icy walkways treated in winter.
- Duration: one afternoon, then recheck every season.
What you get
- Removes the most common trip hazards at home.
- Better lighting on stairs and night paths.
- Worth doing at any age, and for parents' homes too.
Contraindications
- Medicines that cause dizziness or drowsiness are a fall risk the home audit cannot fix — ask a doctor or pharmacist to review them.
- Have your eyes checked at least once a year; poor vision undoes a tidy floor.
- If you have already fallen or feel unsteady, talk to a clinician about a fall-risk assessment and a strength and balance programme.
Evidence level
Medium. Environmental hazard removal is a core, well-supported component of fall prevention in NIA and CDC STEADI guidance, consistently paired with medication review, vision checks and strength-and-balance work — it is one piece of a larger prevention picture rather than a stand-alone fix, which is why it sits at medium rather than high on its own.
