Sauna + Easy Cardio Stack
20 minutes of Zone 2 cardio then 15 minutes in a sauna at 80–90 °C — two cardiovascular stimuli stacked into one 35-minute block, 1–2×/week on lighter training days.
Twenty minutes of Zone 2 cardio followed immediately by 15 minutes in a sauna at 80–90 °C stacks two well-evidenced cardiovascular stimuli into one 35-minute block without doubling total time. Use only on lighter training days; never after maximal-effort sessions.

Two cardiovascular stimuli in one session, without doubling your time.

Protocol
- Order matters: cardio first, sauna second. Doing it in reverse — sauna then hard effort — increases cardiovascular load beyond the intended stimulus.
- Cardio: 20 minutes at Zone 2 — conversational pace, 60–70% max HR. Cycling, rowing, easy running, or brisk walking all qualify.
- Sauna: 15 minutes at 80–90 °C (traditional Finnish dry sauna).
- Hydration: drink water before, during (if available), and after the sauna.
- Frequency: 1–2×/week.
- Do not use after maximal effort — heavy lifting, threshold intervals, or competition — cardiovascular load compounds with accumulated fatigue.
What you get
- Two complementary cardiovascular stimuli — mitochondrial adaptation from Zone 2 and heat-shock protein induction from the sauna — in a single block rather than two separate sessions.
- Time efficiency: the combined block takes about 35 minutes including transition, versus scheduling two separate sessions on different days.
- The Zone 2 block raises core temperature slightly before sauna entry, which some athletes report shortens the subjective adjustment period in the sauna.
Contraindications
- Pregnancy.
- Active cardiovascular disease or recent cardiac event — consult a clinician before combining these two stimuli.
- Heat intolerance or prior heat exhaustion.
- Dehydration — do not enter the sauna if urine is dark or you have not consumed fluids before training.
Evidence level
Medium. Each component — Zone 2 cardio and sauna at 80–90 °C — has independent evidence for cardiovascular benefit. The stacked protocol as a combined intervention has not been studied in isolation in RCTs; the medium rating reflects mechanistically plausible extension of two individually-supported protocols rather than direct trial evidence for the combination. Honour the contraindications without exception.
