The practice
- When a new request or commitment comes in, do not answer on the spot — sleep on it for a day.
- Check it against what you already carry: your current obligations and your priorities.
- Ask two questions: is this important to you, and would it mean months of added stress?
- If it matters to you, take it on. If it does not, take a pass.
- If you cannot wait a day, at least think the request through before you answer.
Where it fits in a day
- It costs about five minutes, spent the day after the request arrives rather than in the moment it is asked.
- It fits any surface a request comes through — a meeting, a message, a favour asked in passing — because the only step on the spot is not answering yet.
- The quick version, for requests that need an answer today, is a deliberate pause to think it through before replying.
Why it works
- MedlinePlus lists learning to say no among its ways to manage stress: if your stress comes from taking on too much at home or work, learn to set limits and ask others for help when you need it.
- A yes given out of guilt or obligation is likely to lead to additional stress and resentment; the one-day wait moves the decision away from that pressure and back to your priorities.

Stress — 5 minutes. Pairs naturally with a scheduled worry window and an evening brain dump, which keep the commitments you already have out of your head.
