What moves the needle
- Sleep quality. Poor or shortened sleep reliably raises morning cortisol. Prioritising 7–9 hours is the single most impactful lever.
- Training load. Overtraining without adequate recovery chronically elevates cortisol. If persistently high alongside fatigue, reduce weekly training volume and retest in 4–6 weeks.
- Morning routine. Protecting the first 90 minutes after waking — no high-urgency tasks, no doom-scrolling — preserves a normal cortisol awakening response and prevents it from being artificially amplified.
- Nutrition. Chronic undereating or skipping breakfast over time can blunt the cortisol awakening response, pushing values low. Consistent caloric intake stabilises the HPA axis.
- Daily recovery practice. Zone 2 exercise, breathwork, or NSDR (non-sleep deep rest) during the afternoon counteracts cortisol accumulation without suppressing the healthy morning peak.
Why this test is worth asking for
- Morning cortisol is the most informative cortisol draw — the awakening response is the largest daily surge and the most reproducible window for comparison across tests.
- Chronically elevated cortisol degrades sleep, impairs insulin sensitivity, suppresses immune function, and accelerates muscle loss — all directly relevant to longevity.
- Low morning cortisol can be the first sign of HPA axis dysregulation from burnout, overtraining syndrome, or (rarely) adrenal insufficiency — worth catching early.
